Whereas, in 2023, the Community Affairs Committee commissioned the Sister Projects Task Force, composed of a mix of Trustees and Wikimedia community volunteers, to build a strategy to support the life cycle of non-Wikipedia projects across the movement;
Whereas, the Sister Projects Task Force created (and the Community Affairs Committee approved) a Procedure for Sibling Project Lifecycle, which outlines the processes for opening and closing new Wikimedia projects;
Whereas, the Sister Projects Task Force took up two proposals as initial cases for applying the Procedure for Sibling (Sister) Project Lifecycle: a proposal to open a new project called Wikispore, and a proposal to close the Wikinews project;
Whereas, the Sister Projects Task Force reviewed the cases, proposed potential actions, and published those proposals for community consultation;
Whereas, the Sister Projects Task Force has recommended that no immediate changes be made to Wikispore’s technical setup;
Whereas, the Sister Projects Task Force has recommended that all current language versions of Wikinews be archived, and no new versions be created; and
Whereas, the Community Affairs Committee has approved the recommendations from the Sister Projects Task Force to be brought to the Board of Trustees for a final decision;
Now, therefore, it is
RESOLVED, that all current language versions of Wikinews shall be archived;
RESOLVED, that Wikimedia Foundation staff shall be responsible for determining the timeline, methods, and other operational details for the archiving of Wikinews;
RESOLVED, that the Board instructs the Language Committee not to consider or approve any new language versions of Wikinews; and
RESOLVED, that the Wikimedia Foundation shall consider the additional recommendations from the Sister Project Task Force, namely: exploring options to more closely align Wikispore with the Wikimedia Incubator, and supporting and providing resources to groups exploring new paradigms for Wikimedia news content.
