Legal:Mobile Testing Study Privacy Statement
This statement describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from participants in the Wikimedia Foundation's engaged browsing study (the "study") related to the Feeds feature.
Please note that this study is powered by Shift 6 Ltd (the makers of Appsee, the app we are using to facilitate this study), which means Shift 6 Ltd's use of your information is governed by their Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Basic information needed to facilitate the study will also be collected using Google Forms. Google's use of your information is governed by their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Purpose of Study
We are always looking to improve user experience so that the Wikimedia projects are useful to you. This study will help us understand how users experience the iOS Wikipedia mobile app, particularly whether the iOS app's Feed feature encourages Wikipedia users to browse multiple Wikipedia articles and whether this behavior affects how much users use the app over time.
What Information We Collect
Ordinary use of the Wikipedia mobile app results in the routine transfer of certain information to our servers, such as your IP address, for example. See the section of our Privacy Policy that deals with "Information we receive automatically" for details. If you choose to participate in this study, we will collect additional information, including your username; your email address; information regarding the device (e.g. device name, operating system, version, and model) you are using; the country you are participating in the study from; video, and screen content (captured by the screen of your device) while using the iOS Wikipedia mobile app; your touch gestures and scrolling activity performed on your device; banners and other notifications (as they may appear on your device's screen), and any other data included in the actions you perform on or the information that you enter into or submit to the iOS Wikipedia mobile app.
Information Sharing and Disclosure
The information collected through this study will be shared on Meta-Wiki for the purpose of open analysis, research, and study, in the following manner:
Information that is not personally identifying can be shared in any form with anyone, including the general public. Personally identifying information that has been anonymized or aggregated may be shared publicly. Raw, personally identifying information, such as email addresses or usernames, will only be shared with the Wikimedia staff, contractors, service providers, and volunteers who need to process this information and are subject to non-disclosure obligations, with the exception of the circumstances described below. We may use your email address to contact you in the future about other studies or Wikimedia-related activities.
We may disclose any collected information when required by law, when we have your permission, when it has been made public through no wrongdoing on our part, when needed to protect our rights, privacy, safety, users, or the general public, when needed for our service providers to provide their services to us or for us to use their goods or services, and when necessary to enforce our Terms of Use or any other Wikimedia policy.
Licensing of Survey Responses
By participating in this study, you agree that we may record video of your interactions with the iOS Wikipedia mobile app, and agree to license such recordings, collected information, and works made by you related to this study under a CC0 1.0 License.
Important Information
The Wikimedia Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, California. By participating in this study (whether inside or outside of the U.S.), you agree to the collection, transfer, storage, processing, disclosure, and other uses of the collected information in the United States and other places as may be necessary to carry out the purposes and objectives discussed above. You also consent to the transfer of your information by us from the U.S. to other countries, which may have different or less stringent data protection laws than your country, in connection with providing services to you.
We do not change our behavior in response to a web browser's "do not track" signal.
The information collected through this study may be kept in raw or anonymized form indefinitely. See our data retention guidelines for more information.
We reserve the right to make changes to this privacy statement without notice. Please review this privacy statement regularly. Your continued participation in this study will constitute acceptance of updates to this privacy statement.
Please note that in the event of any differences in meaning or interpretation between the original English version of this Privacy Statement and a translation, the original English version takes precedence.
