Hello!

Thank you for creating an account for me here :) I can help with cleaning here, so I would love to have (if it is possible, of course) an admin hat here. Is there an established application process for this? As a volunteer editor I am an administrator in Ukrainian Wikipedia since 2012. I promise not to break anything :) --NTymkiv (WMF) (talk) 23:15, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @NTymkiv (WMF): - I think these requests are normally done through email to ca@wikimedia.org for tracking purposes. If you want to email there and just explain a little about why you want the flag on this wiki that'd be grand. JSutherland (WMF) (talk) 23:51, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation! --NTymkiv (WMF) (talk) 18:36, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Just an FYI I edited this page to merely move the category so that it wasn't broken. I hope this is OK. I try to avoid touching official actions. -- とある白い猫 chi? 23:37, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's totally fine! Thanks for the heads-up. Looks like it might be an issue with the automated tool; I'll see if we can fix that. JSutherland (WMF) (talk) 23:46, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can investigate if there are others if you like. While not vital, categorization of such decision is probably helpful to some people. -- とある白い猫 chi? 10:03, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I don't think just editing them will affect anything, so long as the core text of the email is retained. But don't quote me on that. :) Pinging James for his thoughts. JSutherland (WMF) (talk) 19:32, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
