Closing tvar needed

Hi @GVarnum-WMF: Could you please add a closing tvar in T:34 for tvar "1"? --Ameisenigel (talk) 12:39, 1 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Ameisenigel - apologies for that error - all fixed now. Thank you! --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 16:13, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Displaytitle

Why displaytitle instead of built-in ability to translate page name? Wargo (talk) 13:09, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

For various reasons - sometimes the wiki page name is not as descriptive as we would like - or with the namespace can come off a little confusing to people less familiar with wikis. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 02:15, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Note this practice has changed such that pages using {{DISPLAYTITLE}} tag no longer have their page titles setup for translation as well. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 05:06, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

remove duplication of the list of namespaces

Please remove the list of lines from

;<translate><!--T:19--> Main namespace General content,...

to

:<translate><!--T:28-->
[[Special:MyLanguage/Archive:Main|Archived]] or historical content no longer in active use on this wiki and available for migration to another wiki (generally [[:m:Special:MyLanguage/Main Page|Meta-Wiki]])

since it already duplicates the contents described on the referenced page Wikimedia:Namespaces_guidelines which is the right place.

Yes, the page of guidelines is complete enough and concentrates all the informations. Doing so, it removes the additional work for translators, making also difficult to update each pages synchronized when modification occur either on the main page or one of its duplicated. --Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 12:10, 27 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Wladek92: I recognize the duplication, but given the importance of this information for editors - my preference would be to leave the duplication in place. There are also namespaces discussed on the guidelines which may just confuse more novice wiki editors. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 16:52, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
hi Greg, rather shouln't it be better to use a transclusion to centralize all the informations in a single point ? -- Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 07:40, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I thought about that - but as the two pages have developed, I think Namespaces page has more "in the weeds" details. Which, has its own value, but not necessarily what is most relevant for "frequent editors". That all said, this is all still very much "new" and I am very open to changing over time. So I reserve the right to completely change my mind and support what you are recommending at a later time (and recognize for sake of management convenience, much of this is being decided by a small group based on our best gut instincts - which could be wrong, and even that approach will likely evolve over time), but for now, feel compelled to keep the page's content separate. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 02:13, 28 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
